Hydroponics at Hoffer Farm

Hydroponics at Hoffer Farm

Growing with Purpose

Our hydroponics system at Hoffer Farm uses nutrient-rich water—not soil—to grow fresh, healthy greens year-round. This method allows us to produce more food using less space, no non-organic pesticides, and significantly less water than traditional farming.

Hydroponics at Hoffer Farm

Grown Fresh, Shared Freely

Each week, we harvest 60–70 pounds of leafy greens using our soil-free, water-based hydroponic system. You’ll find:

  • Romaine lettuce
  • Red gem lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Basil
  • Dill
  • Parsley

These nutrient-rich greens are sold to residents (on Thursdays in the mailroom), featured on the menu at Hearth & Harrow, and donated to local food pantries—helping us fight food insecurity one harvest at a time.

Chatty Chickens at Hoffer Farm

No Waste, Just Taste

Nothing goes to waste at Hoffer Farm. Outer leaves not quite perfect for the plate are happily devoured by our chickens as part of a zero-waste cycle.

We also avoid non-organic pesticides altogether, using only food-safe, environmentally friendly sprays that are gentle on people and the planet.

Join Us in the Greenhouse

We welcome hydroponics helpers!

Volunteers typically meet on Thursdays from 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM. No experience necessary, just a willingness to get your hands a little wet and help us grow something good.

“I’m immensely proud that we’ve built a hydroponics farm serving so many members of the community—all with a small group of retired volunteers!”
— Steve Seitz, Resident Volunteer

What's Next for the Farm?

In addition to hydroponics, we’re cultivating even more ways to grow and learn:

Hybrid Popcorn Planting at Hoffer Farm

Popcorn

In partnership with Manheim Central’s Ag Program, students planted popcorn behind the animal pens in spring 2025. They’ll gain hands-on experience with growing, harvesting, packaging, and selling popcorn as a fundraiser.

High Tunnels at Hoffer Farm

High Tunnels

We’re building three high tunnels to extend our growing season and expand seedling production.

Orchards at Hoffer Farm

Future Crops

We’re planning high-density orchards and educational gardens to support lifelong learning and community wellness.
